question 4
My audience for my media product would mostly be females as I feel they are more sensitive than men and they go through more with their beauty than anyone else, women some times have a low self esteem and are always looking for ways to better themselves so they will make more of a connection with the piece. In particular probably black females, as in the media black people are sometimes portrayed as inferior or troubled so they will understand why most of the cast are from a particular ethnicity. During the screening, females engaged with the thriller opening more and I got more detailed responses because they had a better understanding and they enjoyed it the most as they 'like the black edit of it.'

audience feedback
\
this right here is our audience feedback. In our feedback we had mixed reviews, some people liked it and not so much. Girls preferred the piece more than boys did so they could relate more but overall , most people said we need to work on the sound as it was very unstable and overwhelming at some points. We also had too many unnecessary clips of us walking so it was seen as 'boring' at some points.
screening
Today I screened my thriller piece to various people with this we got to see who really liked it and who didnt , I got feedback on what went well and also constructive criticism. some people liked it and some poeple did not As it is only the first draft I will take into account what they have said and try and improve the thriller.

Sound
Sound Exercise and Evaluation
For our sound exercise we were ordered to do a short film to practise different types of sound we have been learning recently. In our film we added various types of sound: diegetic, non-diegetic, parallel, dialogue and music, this allows the clip to have more depth as it makes it more sophisticated.
First of all we put non-diegetic music in the background (Maroon 5 - Sunday Morning) of our play to set the mood of a peaceful and calm environment while Ellie and I were reciting our dialogue. We added about 3 flashbacks in our play referring to a "party" that happened the weekend before. For each of these flashbacks we added non-diegetic and parallel flashback music so it would be clear to the audience that we are going back in time, this minimises confusion for the audience. When the flashbacks of the party took place we added diegetic sound that Denis was dancing to on a table and when a "fight" was taking place. We added some more diegetic sound of sirens for when the police arrived at the party.
Evaluation
Diegetic sound is sound that occurs in film that is natural. These sounds include doors opening and closing, footsteps, dialogue (the voices of the actors if they are talking on screen), any music that comes from radios in the film or played on musical instruments, thunderstorms, tyres screeching and explosions. Any sound that is caused by actions or actually happens in the course of the film is diegetic sound. It makes the situation seem surreal as the sounds you would expect to hear in that place would not be occurring.
Overall, I think the sound exercise went well as we used different types of sound effectively and it was coherent with what was going on at each moment, the only thing that went wrong was the fact you could see the microphone in the film. The visual microphone made the piece seem less professional because it reminds the audience that it was unreal and the whole point of the exercise was to make everything as realistic as possible. When I make my thriller I will not make those mistakes.
Modern thriller openings
This movie starts with an establishing/pan shot which shows the audience that the films opening is shot in a house. It starts very normal so it's a surprise when the child gets shot. This shot is a complete contradiction to what we see later in the thriller opening.

No Country for Old Men
This has such a big effect on the audience. We experience dramatic irony when a wide shot is shown because when the police officer gets strangled he doesn't know what he is in for but the audience do so it creates hypertension for people that watch. This is why it is called a thriller because it gives us a 'thrill', also it creates suspense and leaves us wondering what will happen next.

Zodiac
The movie opens with diegetic music playing out of a car, the scene lasted long and didn't change frequently so the director created a relaxed mood for the audience. The scene was also long enough for the audience to understand where the movie is set which is in the 60s and what was going on. Up until this point everything is calm and peaceful. A girl in a car picks up a boy and while she is driving they have a common conversation, then they stop to talk some more and someone pulls up behind them.
Someone comes out of the car and from the way the boy and girl in the car greet him/her it tells the audience that this is someone they know but suddenly a gun is pulled out and he assassinates them both. By the director doing this he created somewhat a cliffhanger at the beginning of the film so it makes the audience want to carry on watching and solve the mystery of this sequence.
Brick
Blue is the colour of the sky and the water. Blue is symbolized trust, intelligence and wisdom. Also blue is associated with health, as it has a calming effect. Blue is a masculine colour. Dark blue is associated with knowledge, power , light blue is associated with health and healing.

first production meeting
Nadine and I were previously working with two other boys in our class but due to the inconvenience of different visions of what we wanted in our final piece, we decided it is best if we split groups. Although we had already confirmed our initial ideas, nadineand I have started another film opening.
We have decided on a new idea that could possibly be based in school as it is easy to access a convenient and will involve some of our classmates for extra help with any filming we will need, the new idea is time consuming and it will not take us a long time to do.
Editing day 3- final day of the first draft
This is the last day of editing and now we are just running through the piece and touching up any few little imperfections we can. We have finally got out piece to just under 2 minutes, now we have applied a black and white filter it is ready to publish onto YouTube, it is now good to go and all we need now is some audience feedback on how to make it better. after that we will now go back on the editing and try and make some improvements.
Editing - Day 2
this is day 2 of Editing and Now we have made our title sequence on the end, we have our near finished version of our opening and we have also found our non - diegetic music and have put it throughout the piece so it's ongoing. We have also managed to cut our opening to 3 minutes which is also too long, we had extra time in our piece because our point of view shots were too long, we learnt that once the audience have established what we're trying to show (that I'm following someone) then that shot doesn't need to go on for any longer. We have also put the credits on the beginning of our opening and chose the font/size by using PicMonkey even though we know that this is only the first draft and we will still need more time making it better after we have got some feed back on it
Designing/ Making: Title Sequence
This is our title sequence for our thriller, the eye represents the eye the stalker (me) uses to stalk her victim (Tayo). The red colour represents the danger present in our piece and the font we used through PicMonkey looks as if blood has been used to draw the name so I am very happy with it and it foreshadows a lot that happens in the thriller opening.
Editing Day 1
Today we have put all our clips onto Adobe Premiere Pro, we have all our clips put into chronological order. Next time, we have to create a title sequence for our thriller opening. Right now our piece is actually 5 minutes long and that is double the restricted time but in our next editing day we can cut all the unnecessary clips we included, and we still have to think of ways in which we can make the sound be more precise.
Past Student Work
This is a thriller due to the non diegetic sinister music and the lighting is very dull and dark which tells us that something bad is going to happen. the prop used is a real life gun and with this it already suggests to us the thriller effect because you can associate it with death and danger. there were also some really fast quick cuts and changes in the angle shots. i would give this a 4/4 as it holds suspense and this is what a thriller should actually be about.
This thriller opening shared the same qualities to the previous thriller but rather than having tension music at the beginning, this is a really way of showing us a thriller as it goes on from a happy non-diegetic sound to the middle of the scene showing suspense which foreshadows something bad happening at the end. i would give this a 4/4 as it allows the audience to believe that it will be a happy film but in effect it isnt. " not everything glittlers is gold"
This thriller was not as effective as the other two because there was no depth, the same location and the same lighting, it had no effect on the audience. It is very basic so I would give this a 2/4 although techniques were used effectively like the close up when the girl was on her phone and the jump cuts when she was walking.
preliminary task evaluation
We attempted to explain the story of David and me interacting in conversation which interrupted a conversation Denis and David were having earlier. Denis then got jealous and threw a bottle at David so I called Nadine for help and the two girls saved the day by catching Denis. Denis felt so bad and jumped out of the window because he couldn't deal with the consequences of putting David into a coma.
Match on Action
The cut that connected two different views of the same action at the same moment in the movement. We carefully matched the movement across the two shots, to make it seem that the motion continues uninterrupted. The action began with the first shot of Denis walking through the door and ended in the second shot.
Eye line Match
We created the eye line match with a logical coherence between the shots and made the storytelling smooth, logical and continuous by beginning the scene with Denis looking at something off-screen. It was then followed by a cut to the object or person at which he is looking. Shot, Reverse Shot and 180 degree rule
When you are a constructing a shot reverse shot edit you must ensure that during filming the shots you abide by the 180 degree rule. This ensures that the two characters retain the same left right relationship during the scene.
Overall we used each technique accurately because we stuck to the 180 degree rule and re-did the shots until they were to the best possible standard although we couldn't avoid the fact that the camera was shaking at some points e.g the high angle shot making the project seem a bit unprofessional. The most positive elements of the project were the reverse shots as showed the understanding of this skill at two different points, it was used during both conversations.

3rd production meeting
Now we have started filming, we have got to the midway point of our opening. Throughout, we have a lot of takes that are not going to be any use to us, so we have started deleting the shots that went wrong and picking the shots that went smoothly. We have also looked through our filming to ensure we have all the different types of shots in our shot list, even though we did not use all the different types of shots we enquire to make a good thriller opening, we realise that even though our film is not perfect and there will be some mistakes, the editing process should be able to make the film better.

A biochemist and his dishy wife arrive in berline for a conference at which a scientist and his controversial Arab funder will announce breakthrough research.
while his wife checks into the hotel, he grabs a cab and with no hesitation returned back to the airport for his briefcase, left at the curb where he had suppose to have left his briefcase, on his way to the airport and auto accident puts him in a coma, where he lays there for a couple of days, when he awakes he is unable to recover some of his memory and he had no identification of who he was so no one could identify him to maybe contact his family. with help from a nurse and cab driver, a retired stasi agent, and a academic friend, he tries to unravel what was going on. now we as an audience are going on this journey with him to help unravel who he is and what his mission actually is.
the thriller show some cinematography and shows how a thriller should really be like, the trailer captivates the audience and foreshadows what will happen at the end of the movie.
Key scenes of tension:
• Film has essential characteristic of a good thriller - moments of high tension.
• e.g. The hospital scene reaching for scissors leading to murder.
1. Soundtrack effective – disorientating sounds
2. Use of close up.
3. Fast editing leading up to the escape.
4. Analyse the scene in the Flat
The Club Scene
This scene is effective because:
• Loud booming soundtrack – disorientating and threatening
• Screen dark – only shadows – indistinct – the viewer shares the main character’s confusion.
In this film White Western people are portrayed as the dominant group and the immigrants are the subordinate group we know this because they are frightened of being deported and they have very low paid jobs. This archetype represents ethnic minorities and it is a negative representation of the opposing race.
"erm it might be interesting to play someone who is confused all the way up until the last 20 minutes of the film" - 1:50. This reflects on Todorov's theory especially in the 'disruption' faze.

2nd production meeting
My group has moved on further, nadine and I have now created a shot list and storyboard for our thriller opening. Our production is named 'Beautiful Insanity'. In the second image we have discussed and noted down our main storyline for our project, the name of the production and our production company. Along with the contrapuntal music we will be using throughout the final piece, we decided on the music now because we have a strong idea and we needed to get the basics finalised, we will be using a lot of different shots in our film to show our knowledge further. also because it is just me and nadine, we will be asking other people to take part in the filming as well.
